Surf-n-Turf

The mid-winter surf-n-turf went really well. Mom came, as well as my brother and his girlfriend. Scott and I started this meal meaning to make it a tradition two years ago but missed 2010 due to the kitchen remodel. It’s my chance to host a family meal as Thanksgiving and Christmas are already spoken for by other family members.

I served a standing rib, crab cakes, twice baked potatoes (courtesy of hubby) and carrots. The appetizer was crab dip and dessert was a lemon bundt cake – Grandma’s lemon bundt cake. I also served two wines – one red (not one as rich as a Burgundy or a Bordeaux but something similar to a Merlot. Mom and Lucy both liked it. My brother Alex isn’t a wine drinker.) and one white (a French bistro wine that hubby particularly liked from class. Bistro wines are just what the name implies – a standard wine served in French bistros. Nothing fancy, but good), as well as a sweet dessert wine. Goodrich’s (one of the better wine stores in the area) was out of the Muscadet de Setabul so I tried something in the same vein. I didn’t like it quite as well as what I was hoping to buy but Mom thought it was wonderful. I think that was the first time she’d ever had a “fortified” wine (a dessert wine that has brandy in it).

The whole house still smells wonderful from the cooking.
