Not! Fair!

We’ve been snowied into the house for the past two days due to the Polar Vortex but back at work today. After being cooped up for so long I opted to go out to lunch with two colleagues. The cold was tolerable and the snow heaps were truly magnificent. A few slippery spots. Some tree limbs still dangling into the roads from the storm over the holidays. It has been one impressive winter season so far.

On the way back into the building the other female of our trio stopped for a coffee so it was just me and the Jackal winding our way through the utility hallways to take a shortcut to the staff area. We were stopped by three maintenance workers that I didn’t recognize.

“Oh! I’m in your way,” I said politely.

“Not at all, we’re in yours, we’ll be done right quick,” one of them replied, applying this enormous inverted blue contraption over a part of the ceiling. He looked in it. He waited. It was a complete mystery to me.

“What are you doing?” I inquired, all innocence.

Completely matter-of-fact he comes back with: “Sucking the rats out of the ceiling tiles.”

I backed up against the wall and muttered, “Charming.”

All four guys start cracking up. The Jackal explains to me that the man was testing the ventilation. When Mean Maintenance Man #1 moved the blue contraption I could see it was indeed over a vent.

“Not! Fair! Making fun of the females, guys!” I said.

The Jackal told me my face was priceless.
