Card catalog
Card Catalog

Six years ago, I learned a fascinating librarian fact: card catalog drawers are the perfect size for storing a bottle of wine. I decided that I would go on a quest to replace the non-inspired wine rack in the living room with a rock-on card catalog.

Little did I know that card catalogs are de rigueur for all fashionable librarians and while no one I knew personally had a card catalog for this purpose in their home, the price tags of card catalogs indicated lots of other people were in the market. So, I got on a notification list at eBay for card catalogs within 500 miles of mid-Michigan and regularly received updates. For six years I tracked prices and locations of card catalogs. I bid on several and finally bought the lovely, turn-of-the-century maple job pictured above that holds a dozen bottles.

Here’s where Hubby and our friend Dudley Elvery comes into the picture. Dudley is going to build a stand for it. Right now, I’ll admit, the catalog doesn’t look very impressive. But the plans we have going include a lighted under-cupboard with additional room for wine storage which will bring the card catalog itself up to waist level. I can’t wait!
