BTBL January: A Canticle for Leibowitz

So, the first read for 2015 at the Braille and Talking Book Library (BTBL) club was hosted by Bunny Rabbit Hat (fourteen guesses on how she got that nickname).

I tried. I really tried to read this book. I read it for about an hour before I admitted I didn’t know what was going on, didnt care, didn’t want to figure it out. I don’t dislike either sci-fi or post-apocalyptic tales out of hand but this title just felt like so much work.

I was planning to go to the discussion anyway but then it turned out I needed to make fajitas for a friend coming out of the hospital and I had some grocery-shopping-followed-by-veggie-chopping-followed-by-prep-cooking so that I could enjoy her company when she arrived and not spend our time together dishing up little bowls of fajita toppings.

So, I didn’t even go to the discussion. I did apologize to Bunny Rabbit Hat.

But bookclubs arent about making it to every discussion. Nobody manages that. And it’s not about liking every book. That’s impossible (and liking every book is not the point). But it is about community and the only way I really feel i fell down on the job with this one was not supporting Bunny Rabbit Hat in her first hosting experience.
