Decorating with Indian wall hangings and Cat Stevens jacket art

When hubby and I set out to redecorate the pink bathroom we also had designs on re-accessorizing the living room. We’ve come in well under budget on that project and are very pleased by the results.

I am now using our bookshelves as more purposeful display space and I’ve completely re-dressed the wall that the fireplace is on. Don’t forget the power of a well-chosen accent pillow. We didn’t replace a single big-ticket item and yet the whole room looks that little bit classier now. It’s a very nice effect.

The one thing still in process is the undercabinet for our wine rack. Our wine rack is a maple card catalog. A little piece of librarian trivia for you: a card catalog drawer perfectly stores a bottle of wine. A close family friend with exceptional wood-working skills is building us a lighted, maple stand with a glass front to hold additional bottles and bring the entire piece of furniture up to waist height. We’re so excited; we’ll probably have it in the next few months and I’ll post photos.

Atop the card catalog is an experiment for me, I’m decorating with album jacket art. I’m using original Cat Stevens vinyl albums in a book stand to accent the room.

Many thanks to everyone in our circle who answered my email when I queried, “what is the focal point of my living room?”

“The fireplace” got the most votes and my sister-in-law Lovely and I did some hard-core Ann Arbor shopping for wall hangings to accent it. We struck gold at Orchid Lane and Ten Thousand Villages. Madame B and I did a run back to town last week to get the hangers themselves. I also simplified the mantle decorations while adding a colorful splash of picture frames.

I can now add decorating to my list of hobbies, and how much fun is that. Learn something new about yourself everyday.

Here’s another shot. I love this part of the room.

This is the other hanging; it’s a deep brown.

This is the best shot i could get of both hangings although honestly I don’t think it’s a great pic. The look “as a whole” is better when you’re in the room.

Totally Cat Stevens. Totally Tea for the Tillerman. That’s a wine rack underneath.

Nothing new here but an accent pillow or two; just so you can see what’s on the window wall.
