: All Quiet On the Western Front:
This movie begins with a quote from the book:
This book is to be neither an accusation nor a confession, and least of all an adventure, for death is not an adventure to those who stand face to face with it. It will try simply to tell of a generation of men who, even though they may have escaped shells, were destroyed by the war.
I’m not feeling particularly wordy tonight so I’ll say simply that, compared to Wings, another WWI movie, this was much more poignant and powerful. I watched it in bits and pieces so the impact was diminished but still inescapable. And, of course, I simply prefer anti-war movies to pro-war movies.
