: Cavalcade :
Cavalcade isn’t available on Netflix, wasn’t even reviwed by filmsite.org and didn’t fare well at Rotten Tomatoes. It was apparently the story of a privileged British family and their household. From reviews I saw I guess I didn’t miss much.
: King Kong :
As iconic as it became, King Kong received no Academy Award nominations the year it was released.
The human acting was delightful, the score was excellent, and the bold action adventure tale of lust and dinosaurs so much fun. But, of course, the special effects are so rough that unless you’re feeling generous it can ruin the whole thing. Fortunately I was feeling indulgent. I saw the 2005 remake and enjoyed that one too.
But films like King Kong are just never going to be in the top spots at the Academy Award table where an occasional comedy will win but mostly the winners are deathly serious biopic dramas. That’s too bad. There’s more out there than that and King Kong is a good example. There are also socially significant films out there worthy of academy awards and I’ll be bitching and complaining about their lack of recognition as we get further on. There’s room at the top for lots of kinds of movies, even ones I don’t personally care for as the next year’s winner will show (so clearly).
