My thoughts on Donald Trump

Everyone who knows me personally knows how I feel about Donald Trump. But I think we’ve reached a point where the seriousness of his campaign can no longer be overlooked and we must each be willing to take a public stand.

I was gentle on Facebook. A couple of months ago I made my profile picture this quote: if you are more fortunate than others it is better to build a longer table then a taller fence. My Facebook presence is very much intertwined with my professional life. I thought gentle was the right way to go.

Here, I won’t be so gentle. Donald Trump is a fear mongering Messiah of hate who must never reach the White House as our president. As I understand it, only 40% of American Republicans are willing to vote for Donald Trump. That gives me some faith in the Republican Party. However, the republican party hasn’t been able to get its shit together and propose a reasonable alternative. That’s on them.

The rise of Donald Trump is also on the rest of us. I blame Jon Stewart as much as I blame Fox news for it. We all gave his tired brand of hyperbolic media pandering two thumbs up when it was entertaining. What no one apparently saw coming was the fact that so many people would take him seriously. Now that so many people have, it’s time for the rest of us to take a stand and ensure that he does not become our president.

Democracy and the process of democracy should absolutely be taken seriously. Within a democracy, it is possible for mistakes to happen. We are at a juncture. We can prevent a great mistake from happening. By manipulation and back room deals if necessary, as long as it happens. They’re a built-in part of the process. Use them. Because the consequences of it not happening are too horrible to imagine. Donald Trump as president of United States would be a disaster for the entire world. We have a responsibility as Americans to make sure that that does not happen.

Polling data at this point is clear that Donald Trump cannot beat Hillary Clinton in a general election as things stand now. However, Clinton may implode. I am a huge supporter of Hillary Clinton, I was proud to vote for her here in Michigan, and I look forward to voting for her in the general election come what may. But politicians of all stripes have a tendency to implode. That could happen to Clinton with or without the influence of Donald Trump. That might leave him the only candidate standing to a lot of people. And that makes it too close a proposition in my books. He must be stopped by the time of the Republican national convention in July.

And so from the bully pulpit of my blog I call on my establishment Republican friends and family to organize within their party and do what is necessary to stop Donald Trump from the inside, by any political machinations necessary. The Republican Party has suffered a severe blow in his rise. It will only be worse if Trump actually makes it to the White House. The consequences to the Party of running him out of town are much preferable to letting him, or helping him, win. Get on the right side of history with this one. You will earn not just my gratitude and respect, you will stop a monster’s ascent.

I have watched the power of the Republican Party all my life. I believe you can do this if you come together and I’m putting the impetus on you. Find yourselves an alternative to Clinton and put them on the ballot in November.
