1954:On the Waterfront or Rear Window

:On the Waterfront:

I was truly taken by the acting performances of Marlon Brando and Eva Marie Saint. They did an outstanding job with their characters. If possible, I enjoyed Brando in this movie even more then in A Streetcar Named Desire. However, even with all that said, I wasn’t as taken with the movie as a whole. This movie has won recognition on many lists of “the best” movies, including the Vatican’s list. But to be honest, I simply wasn’t as taken with the storytelling as others seem to be. This is the story of mob rule among longshoremen. Frankly, I didn’t find it all that compelling. But I am definitely in the minority on that one.

:Rear Window:

I watched this with Hubby and my mom while on vacation in the UP. It was a joy. So well done on so many levels! The acting, the directing, the sets. While Grace Kelly isn’t my type, her performance was impressive, as was Jimmy Stewarts.

In reviewing these Hitchcock classics it’s a sore reminder of how he was passed up by the Academy.

Hmmm, there may be some good reasons why many of the winners don’t resonate with me given that I truly enjoyed this one, was truly taken in by it, was a VIEWER, hook, line and sinker, and yet it wasn’t even nominated for best picture. I think my brain runs on a different course than the Academy.
