1960: The Apartment and Psycho

:The Apartment:

:Psycho:

Betsie and I sat down with Chinese take-out and hot fudge sundaes one Friday night to watch Psycho. It was her first time and I hadn’t seen it in over 30 years. The next morning had me closing and locking the bathroom door before taking a shower.

Even if you don’t like the horror genre, chances are that you’re going to like Psycho. There’s not much in the way of gore (although there is some of that, I won’t lie to you), but the acting and storytelling is top-notch. Anthony Perkins, Janet Leight, Vera Miles and John Gavin play their characters to a T. There’s no chainsaws or spectacular special effects to create shock value. Hitchcock takes one scary concept and works with it, not diluting his message, playing it out over two hours while stringing his audience along.

This is the type of movie I started this quest for. The classics of American film. I don’t like horror and I don’t watch horror but liked and watched this and feel more culturally aware because of that.
