1961: West Side Story or Breakfast at Tiffanys or The Hustler or Splendor in the Grass

:West Side Story:

Betsie bought a copy of this, her favorite movie (and remember, favorite is a tier), and after a dinner of Chinese takeout, she, Joel and myself sat down to watch it.

The dance numbers were truly evocative and the storyline dark and engaging. I’ve heard tell that some people didn’t think audiences would go for dancing gang members but now it’s so culturally ingrained that I didn’t even question it. Simply Romeo and Juliet retold, and retold well. I liked this musical although I wouldn’t go out of my way to watch it again.

It caused Joel to declare that the next movie had to be more lighthearted which led us to survey two decades worth of award winners and shoulda coulda wouldas and find the very few lighthearted movies coming up. It isn’t looking good.

:Breakfast at Tiffanys:

Filmsite notes that this gem was not even nominated in 1961 although I watched it because Betsie thought it would be fun, not because of filmsite’s note. I was not as taken with it as I thought I would be. I think I prefer stories ABOUT Truman Capote rather than stories BY Truman Capote. To be honest, it fell completely flat for me.
