:The Sound of Music:
One sunny Sunday, Joel, Betsie and I enjoyed an Indian buffet lunch, cupcakes at Gigi’s, and an afternoon of the Sound of Music.
As we know, my judgment on a movie is to decide whether I would watch it again. That is a Big 10-4 for this one. I have owned a copy of the Sound of Music since it was available on VHS. I used to watch it frequently when I was going through a period of depression in my 20s. However, it had been about 20 years since I had seen it.
Despite being a little long-winded, this movie is truly a joy. The tone is so wholesome and upbeat. I can’t think of anything negative to say about this one. I’m not surprised at all that that great critic film site.org didn’t posit any pretenders to the throne for this year. This was a great movie. And no, I don’t think it was shmaltzy or overly-sentimental. I thought it told a human story very well. Not everything has to be dirty to be fun!
After watching it this time, I was inspired to do a little research. I found out that the movie is based on the memoir of Maria von Trapp, the real life Maria from the movie. I can highly recommend the book. It is also innocent, wholesome, and uplifting, which can sometimes be dull, but instead I found it interesting. Their story of a refugee family from Europe who makes it good in America is positive and uplifting and I’m glad I read it. I also read a history of the film called “The Sound of Music Story: How A Beguiling Young Novice, A Handsome Austrian Captain, and Ten Singing von Trapp Children Inspired the Most Beloved Film of All Time” by Tom Santopietro. If you like movie about the entertainment industry you’ll likely enjoy that one as well.
