BYOT: My Own Ethical Ten Commandments

The homework assignment for this week is to write our own ethical ten commandments. There’s a joke that UUs believe in the Ten Suggestions, or, alternately, that they’d agree to consider the Ten Commandments if they were scheduled to come up for a vote at the next annual conference. I’m not even a Christian but that stretches it for me. If nothing else this class is teaching me that I really am a stodgy old dinosaur in the UU church.

  1. Take joy in God’s grace every day.
  2. Serve others.
  3. Remember that you have value and act on that value.
  4. Love and allow yourself to be loved.
  5. Be merciful with yourself and others.
  6. Work and pray and learn and take time to enjoy yourself most every day.
  7. Feed your primary relationships.
  8. Mind your manners. The world turns on human interaction.
  9. Most of the time, take the moderate path.
  10. You have a duty to grow as a human being.
