Working on my faith statement part 3

What do you believe happens to you after death?

  • I really struggle with this one. My parents taught me from day one that we cease to exist when we die. My faith teaches me that there will be a Judgment Day. The UU church I attend holds that in the end we all go to heaven. And I have no idea.

Who are your guides, your helpers, or your heroes? Who supports you?

  • I have adopted mentors along the course of my life who have been important teachers to me. My heros, that which helps me to think about how I want to live, are mostly books. That may sound strange but the values  and ideas espoused by a well-crafted story and the power of the art behind it inspires me to do good, to act, and to change my thinking or behavior as much or more so than people. Please don’t think my psyche is cold or that I don’t have good people in my life. I do. It’s just that books inspire me and are my heros.

What is your strongest believe that stands out from the rest?

  • My strongest belief is in the existence of God. When you were raised by atheists in the Bible Belt, how you come down on the question of God is a big one.

What do you have faith in?

  • I believe that change is inevitable, sometimes radical, unexpected, painful change and sometimes wonderful, life-affirming change, but that for the most part life is the stuff of the everyday that happens while we’re busy making plans for something more exciting. I have faith in the inevitability of that.

What are your goals? What is your purpose in life?

  • My purpose in life is to fulfill my role in my primary relationships of which friendships with a network of other women are one key, to contribute to my profession, and to take enough time out of life to develop my own interests which include writing and maintaining a healthy mental balance.
