Progress not perfection

A month ago I talked about taking baby steps toward reorienting myself towards better health. To be honest, I wasn’t sure if it would stick. But I’m starting to see results and I’m feeling comfortable with the changes I’m making. They feel sustainable.

For one thing, I’m taking a no-guilt approach. Eat a cupcake with a friend? Cupcakes are not my enemy. Have a day where I go over my calorie guidelines? Put it in the perspective of doing well the rest of the week.

I’m finding that for the most part I know what to do to lose weight. In my first month I lost 6.4 pounds. I’m counting calories with MyFitnessPal. No foods are off-limits. As long as I’m successful on my own I’m not going to go the Weight Watchers route. I learned a lot in the year I followed their plan but I prefer calorie counting over points counting while at the same time applying the lessons I learned about satiety and fiber and whole grains and the importance of fruits and vegetables.

I have a healthier living buddy so I have someone to check in with. As long as what I’m doing produces results I’m not going to look for more structure. There are lots of books and plans about weight loss and/or healthier living but there’s only so much I can apply all at once. And if it’s working, what more do I really want?

I’m feeling pleased. I can do this.
