UU 2: 7: UU Catechism Qs 12-15

12. What is your source of authority in religion?

I am willing to be guided by historical religious texts and I find value in them but I also believe in the ability of sober and mature minds of the modern age to model ethical authority and guide their fellow men and women toward good behavior and an attitude toward religion – and toward life and toward God –  that is appropriate for us. Religious authority is a balance between ancient and historic truths and modern sensibilities that we can relate to according to the best of every age.

13. What do you believe about the Bible as a source of truth?

I believe that is a source of Truth but not necessarily a source of facts.

14. Are you a Christian or not? Why?

I am not a Christian because I made a commitment to God not to associate divine status to His prophets, including Jesus Christ.

15. What is the meaning of life for a Unitarian Universalist?

I am not a Unitarian Universalist and I don’t know what they find to be the purpose of life. Perhaps the development of Beloved Community, or striving toward social justice.

The meaning of my life is to live quietly, and modestly. To do well by family and friends and community members. To live in a way I can be satisfied with and proud of. To live in a way that means I can face God every day. To accomplish a job that helps others.

I fail, a lot.
