Red State Joke

My life is pretty siloed. The people I am friends with, the people I go to work with, and the people I go to church with, all have very similar political views. There are some people in my family who are Republicans and I try to be respectful. The main way I do this by not engaging in political debates. That means I don’t hear their side of things very often. I actually do catch some of Fox and Friends on occasion in the morning, just to check out “the other side,” but not frequently.

We had a guest who works for an American manufacturer that is shutting down his factory. He’s not a line worker, but he’s not in management either. It’s been excruciating. He’s spent years, literally, watching as the factory that is going to replace his has been built in Canada and then gone through start-up pains. Multiple times he’s received lay-off notices only to receive a last minute reprieve. He’s 62. He doesn’t want to stop working, although he could.

And he told us a joke while he was here that was a real “ah-hah” moment for me.

What’s the difference between a Depression and a Recession?

When somebody else loses their job, that’s a recession. When YOU lose your job? That’s a depression.
