Everything I need to know about coping with COVID-19, my mom taught me when I was twelve

My parents had just divorced and I was concerned about our security. My mom was working for the U of M law library. I asked her what would happen to us if she lost her job.

She said she was a good employee, and if she lost her job it would be because the law library was closing.

If that happened, the law school would be closing.

That would mean that the University of Michigan was shutting down.

And we would be in very good company living in Ann Arbor.

Last night on the PBS Newshour, David Brooks said he had been looking into the Spanish flu of 1918 and why it hadn’t made a longer lasting impact on the American consciousness. He found that Americans were ashamed of the way they’d behaved, and actively tried to forget it.

Let’s do it differently. Let’s be good to each other.

We’ll get through COVID-19 with our communities, not in spite of them.
