Our latest meal delivery adventure was a “Fast and Fresh” option from Home Chef: a rice bowl with jalapeno ranch and cheddar. It took 10 minutes to put together and only required a microwave for prep – no chopping, baking, or sautéing.
As you’ve realized, then, a meal with chicken and 10 minutes prep means the chicken came pre-cooked and shredded. And the rice as well. Most of us have eaten these type of convenience foods and know that the base flavor is, well, of a convenience food.
I’m not going to tell you that this was fantastic rice bowl but on the “great” – “not great” continuum it was “good.” What made it good was the combination of sauces (jalapeno ranch and BBQ) and the sliced, fresh, peppers and onions that gave it a gentle crunch. Somebody who was thinking about how to improve a 10 minute meal came up with concrete flavors and textures that did so.
Hubby voted this dish “not as good as Margarita Chicken” but “OK to get again.” Even if he had voted it down for a dinner, I would have gotten it again for a #WFH lunch.
