Draft by Mike Schryer

After many years of digging up information on the SCHRYER family I have gathered many documents, facts and theories pertaining to Simon SCHRYER. Still, solid documentary evidence, covering the family’s first 50 years in Canada, is seriously lacking making the telling of this story difficult. It is based mostly on census and land records, notarial documents, a few surviving vital records family data and secondary sources.
Simon also had several daughters who are not yet known usually having married before the 1851/52 census.
I am posting this draft document in the hope that fellow researchers can comment, correct and question it and perhaps provide more of the missing evidence.
It is a mixture of my own notes and a computer generated report.
Background
Simon was born in the US and was baptised on September 4, 1781, at the Schaghticoke Dutch Protestant Church, Rensselaer Co. N.Y. His parents are listed as Nicholas Schryer & Mary Eastwood. He was married to Phoebe Walker or Walter also born in Vermont in 1788. Phoebe died on February 2nd 1824 and Simon on May 25th 1870.[1]
The US 1800 Census of Highgate Town, Franklin Co. Vermont lists Simeon Schryer & family,
2 males under 10 years,
1 male between 16 & 26,
2 females under 10 years,
1 female between 10 & 16,
1 female between 16 & 26,
1 female over 45.
Highgate Land records:
Vital record books from the Highgate Vermont Town clerk record land transactions entered into by Simon Schryer between 1803 and 1807
On the 18 of July 1803 Simon Schryer of Highgate sold land to Archibald Terry for the sum of sixty dollars [Vital records book 2 p. 49 Highgate VT]
He then leased on September 2nd 1803 from Silas Hathaway & Himan Allen the Northern half of Lot nine in Highgate [Vital records book 2 p. 190-192 Highgate VT]
April 2 1807 Simon received 300 dollars from Moses Bessey of Highgate for the lease of Lot 9. [Vital records book 3 p. 282 293 Highgate VT]
No SCHRYERs were enumerated in the US 1810 Census of Highgate Town:
On the basis of information reported in various censuses, land records and the birth place of his children, it appears that Simon Schryer immigrated to Canada sometime between 1800 and 1810 most likely in 1808.
Abraham, Simons’ younger brother, was already established in Canada by 1812 where he served in the Montreal militia during the war.
The earliest records of Simon in Canada may be in a document referred to as the Montreal Jury list 1816 which describes a Simon SCRIER living at 2 Sherbrooke St. in Montreal. He is a tenant, with an annual income of 15 pound, in the year 1816. Given the time, place and name spelling, this is almost certainly Simon SCHRYER

There was a mention of Simon Schryer in the St Gabriel Presbyterian Church register (Montreal) for Oct.26, 1817 (S. Somerville Minister):
“Mary Anne Schryer, age app. 5, died, buried Oct. 28
Parents: Simon Schryer of Montreal, farmer
& his wife Phoebe Walker”
Simon SCHRYER, in January 1822, purchased for £50, Lot 57 at the Petite Nation from John Harriman to which it was first ceded in 1817. This is the earliest mention of Simon in the Petite Nation. Reference: Cadastres abrégés des Seigneuries du Bas-Canada, 1861 Petite-Nation
The 1825 Census of Lower Canada for the Petite Nation describes Simon’s household of 8 including:
2 children under 6,
2 children between 14 – 6,
1 child between 18 – 14,
1 single male between 25 – 18,
1 married male between 45 – 60,
1 married female between 14 – 45.
In 1826, a letter of D.B.Papineau to Louis J. Papineau mentions:” Schryar qui travail au Moulin…” {translation: “Schryar working at the mill”} p675 (MG 24 B2) Library and Archives Canada.
By the time of the 1842 census there were five Schryer family heads in the Petite Nation: Simon (sr.), Simon (jr.), Herman, Alanson and Joseph.
Orange Schryer, his oldest son, was married in Ottawa in October 1831 and latter settled in Fort Erie, Ontario.
The 1842 Census of Canada East, for the Petite Nation reveals Simon’s household having 11 members:
Simon owns 200 acres; 60 of which are improved. Family members include:
1 married male over 60,
2 married females between 14 – 44,
2 single males 14 – 18,
3 females between 5 – 14,
2 males between 5 – 14,
1 male 5 or under and
7 children between 5 – 16.
Two inmates are natives of Ireland)
The 1851/52 Census of Canada East, for the Petite Nation Simon is 72, born in New York State, religion is Universalist. His occupation is listed as carpenter. His wife is 55, born in Canada, Presbyterian. Also in the household are Harriet (journalière) age 22, Melinda age 18, Jonas age 14 and Benjamin age 12.
His neighbour is Joseph Schryer.
In the 1861 Census Simon is 81, born in US, widower, “Carpenter”. He is now listed as “Non family” living in Herman’s widow’s household.
Jonas is now a family head and has a Mrs. Simon Schryer and Melinda both listed as “Non family”. This Mrs Simon can not be Simon junior’s wife as she is listed on a different page of the census.
In various legal documents, drafted for Simon Schryer Sr. by Notary François-Samuel Mackay, Joseph, Abraham, Jonas and Benjamin are specifically named as Simon’s sons.

Simon SCHRYER (Simon).
Simon jr. is a bit of a puzzle. While he probably is a son of Simon Sr, no evidence has yet been found to support this. The use of the suffix Sr. and Jr. does not necessarily make them father and son.
Simon’s wife; Elisabeth Minor seem to have been Roman Catholic in the 1851/52 census, they were Baptist 1881, 1891 and 1901. Their marriage has not been located in any church records.
While Simon appears to be born before the death of Phoebe Schryer, he is not mentioned as a son of Simon Schryer Sr. in the Joseph Schryer family bible!
Estimates of year of Simon Jr. birth, bases on census and his tombstone, vary between 1813 and 1824

Birth
Abraham John Schryer was born circa January 18, 1791 in the State of Vermont, specifically in Highgate Town, where his birth was registered at the town clerk’s office. His parents were given as “Nicolas and Mary SCRIER” on the registration record dated September 3, 1795.
Immigration to Canada
He moved to Canada some time before 1812 probably after 1806. Family tradition claims that he was one of three brothers who immigrated to Canada. Simon SCHRYER, who eventually settled in the Petite Nation area of Quebec (today the towns of Papineauville and Montebello), was probably one of these brothers. There is evidence to suggest that Simon immigrated to Canada about 1808.
War of 1812-1815
During the war of 1812-1815, Abraham served in Montreal as a private in the 5th Battalion, Embodied Militia of Lower Canada, His name was written as SCRIER in the military documents of the time. He was a member of Capt. J.D. Lacrois’s Company from Oct. 1812 to Apr. 1813; and a member of the Battalion’s Right flank company from April 1813 to March 1814. This company was present at the Battle of Chateauguay on October 26, 1813.
Marriage
He was married to Angelique Bonneau, daughter of Jean-Baptiste Bonneau and Françoise Thomas Daux on August 26, 1816, at the Notre Dame de Montreal basilica. He was converted to the Roman Catholic Church and baptized on August 25, 1816, the day preceding his marriage. Angélique was born on April 23, 1796 in Ste Anne-de-Bellevue, Quebec. She died in Papineauville on March 7, 1879 and was buried there March 9 under the name of Angelique Boileau.

Residence and occupation
From Oct. 1812 to March 1814 Abraham served in the Canadian Militia.
In 1816, at his marriage in Montreal his occupation is given as “shoemaker”.
Between 1820 and 1830, in the various church register records of his children’s baptisms and funerals, his place of residence is consistently shown as the Parish of Ste-Jeanne on the Island of L’Île-Perrot, which lies just southwest of Montreal. His occupation is stated as Chair-maker, carpenter and later as Labourer. In a contract drafted in 1844, in front of Notary Filiatrault of Vaudreuil Quebec, he is again described as “Labourer from L’Île-Perrot.”
At the marriage of his son John in 1847 and in the 1851/52 census he now resides in St-Timothée, in Beauharnois County.

I am a descendant of Abraham Schryer, one of Simon’s brothers. I am now working on finding out all about my ancestors and were I come from and just in one night I have learn so much! I didn’t even know we descended from Germany! I am loving all these stories I am finding and becoming more interested to find even more but it seems to stop with Simon and Abrahams parents Nicholas Schryer and Mary Eastwood. If anyone has any info on them I would love to hear it. one one side of my family tree I was able to go all the way back to 1634!
