1940s Wrap Up

As I look back on some of the best that 1940’s American film had to offer, I’ll take a few moments to reflect on my personal favorites. The ones that impressed me and touched my heart.

Bulleted items meet the Snakeladylibrarian accolade of “movies I would watch again.” The ones below that were films I’m very glad I saw but wouldn’t necessarily repeat.

  • Gentleman’s Agreement
  • It’s a Wonderful Life
  • Notorious
  • Rebecca
  • A Streetcar Named Desire

How Green Was My Valley

The Best Years of Our Lives

All the Kings Men

You may notice that I did not include Citizen Kane or Double Indemnity, two of the most famous movies of the 1940s. They just didn’t capture my imagination. I don’t find myself thinking about those storylines once the movie is over. And given my current lack of appreciation of cinematography or other methods of “movie magic,” I am forced to rely solely on story and what appeals to me. I thought that in this adventure I would learn leaps and bounds and movie making techniques but in fact I’m learning a lot more about what kinds of stories appeal to me.
